Dynamic RFID Print Software Helps Law Firm with Document Security20 Mar, 2012
Dayton, Ohio, March 20, 2012 – Plus Technologies announces that it has developed a version of its OM Plus print software for a secure RFID tag printing environment. This RFID solution is being used initially by a law firm but can be used in multiple environments.
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a term that is used to describe a system that transmits the identity (in the form of a pre-programmed serial number) wirelessly, using radio waves. The programmed RFID tags can then be scanned to track the movement of products.
In this case, a law firm desired to use RFID to track confidential documents. However, the law firm did not want to use ‘pre-programmed’ data on the RFID tags. Instead, they needed software to create unique serial numbers on a page by page basis to enhance the security of the RFID solution. They could then use the RFID technology in a ‘check in and check out’ system where pages are scanned going into and out of storage. RFID tags and scanners have also been used to scan documents in and out of vaults, allowing only an authorized user to retrieve these documents.
The key to the solution was the ability to generate the ‘unique’ serial numbers dynamically based on characteristics of the document and then populate the RFID tags accordingly. This capability was provided by the Plus Technologies solution. The Plus Technologies print system captures unique information about the print job such as document number, number of pages, title, document author, date, time, etc. to create a “unique identifier”.
This unique identifier is then “printed” to the RFID tag using special Lexmark printers. This information is also printed on each page of each document in micro-print. In this way each tag and document is populated with unique and descriptive information. The same ‘unique’ serial number is also stored in a data base that tracks document ‘check-in and check-out’. This dynamic data type of RFID solution provides a richer, more flexible solution.
This RFID print software application builds on Plus Technologies OM Plus Delivery Manager Print Software. Other advantages provided from the OM Plus solution include the ability to re-print documents, re-route documents, allow surrogates to print, and a complete audit trail.
The initial customer for this dynamic RFID printing solution was a large legal firm that had a high print security requirement. However, other applications can be envisioned in health care for patient wrist bands as well as other industries.
