Amtrak Buys and Implements OM Plus Solution

Plus Technologies has recently received an order from Amtrak for OM Plus. Amtrak, headquartered in Washington D.C., is a passenger railroad service that provides medium-and long-distance intercity service to more than 500 destinations in the United States and to nine Canadian cities. Operating more than 300 trains daily over 21,400 miles of track makes Train Bulletin Printing very important.

Train Bulletins are mission critical documents printed at crew exchange points on the transportation network. These documents are used directly by the conductor and engineer aboard the locomotive. All trains are required to have their Train Bulletin documents printed before they can proceed to the next location, so it is imperative to the business that these jobs arrive in a reliable and effective manner.

Train Bulletins can be a series of documents that are needed as a package. Train Bulletin packages are not consistent in the number of copies of each document; however, they are consistent in the type of documents they include, like the Dispatcher Bulletin and the Release Form. Copies are sent to different crew members, like the conductor and the engineer, so a copy of each Bulletin is required per crew recipient; thus package finishing (ie. stapling and page numbering each recipient’s documents) is critical to productivity and compliance.

Solution Description:

The OM Plus print software will support a migration from a very busy legacy application to a cloud based service and provide the print output delivery to printers across the network. OM Plus Delivery Manager (DM) will bring down all emails from the Outlook 365 web mail service. The jobs will be routed based on information included in the job ( Sender email, data in the job, etc.). Train bulletins will be routed to specific queues based on internal data, while non-train bulletins will not be discarded. Extra formatting can be added to the job to remove extraneous characters and format for font size, tray, etc. The OM Plus solution is integrated with PrinterLogic Printer installer that is used to further streamline workstation printing.

The OM Plus implementation includes redundant server/cluster for High Availability printing (server downtime does not create print downtime). OM Plus will also manipulate data and document formats so that print output is compatible with a diverse fleet of devices including Ricoh multifunction color and HP print devices, which support several different print streams including: PCL5, PCL6, PS3, and pdf.

The customer chose a subscription license from Plus Technologies that provides a fixed term license grant in exchange for an annual fee. By doing this the up-front cost of the solution was reduced.
