With Labor Day yesterday we take time to reflect on what Labor Day celebrates. The American labor movement honors the contributions that workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of the country. Labor Day originated in the nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made.

The First Labor Day

The first Labor Day was celebrated on September 5, 1882 in New York City. In just twelve more years by 1894, 23 more states adopted the holiday. June of 1894 President Grover Cleveland signed a law making Labor Day a national holiday.

Labor Day is celebrated the first Monday of September every year and it is considered the unofficial end of summer.
