Cloud Printing Service – Enhanced Printing Features not Available for all Documents
You may have noticed that there have been a number of MPS (Managed Print Services) vendors and printer OEM’s announcing “cloud printing services”. In their announcements they have made statements that imply cloud printing can manage the print delivery needs of all types of corporate documents. For example, Konica Minolta recently announced that their global Cloud Printing Service can manage the “total print” environment of its customers.
That claim may not be completely accurate. While we are sure the cloud print service is quite robust it would not always be able to provide the advanced Output Management” type functions for documents created and printed by “back-end” systems like ERP’s, EMR’s WMS, Accounting and other server based systems. Frequently these backend systems need advanced print delivery (eg print spooling) features such as bi-directional communications with printers, automated fail-over, load balancing, pull-print, integrations with authentications systems (eg Imprivata), the need to capture end user names for statistics and pull print, bundling/kitting of documents, intelligent routing, tamper resistant print, etc. These capabilities may not be available in a Cloud Print environment.
If the features listed above are needed for backend documents then in many cases an Output Management Software (OMS) system like OM Plus Delivery Manager would still be required.
